Thoughts on the 84th Academy Awards nominations
Actor in a Leading Role - Oh look, Leo didn’t get nominated. I’m secretly laughing inside. You know, I personally would be happy if any of these lovely boys won. I’m personally rooting for Gary Oldman, because of reasons… but, but… there’s George Clooney and Brat Pitt and Jean Dujardin…. Life’s not fair.
Actor in a Supporting Role - Christopher Plummer better be winning this or else there’s going to be hell to pay. That is all.
Actress in a Leading Role - I’m biased towards Rooney Mara, strictly because I fucking loved the shit out of her in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. She rocked that and I’m glad she at least got a nomination. All the other ladies are also very deserving of the role, though I think Meryl Streep has done better in the past. And fuck no to Glenn Close. That was a horrible movie and no one did a good job in it.
Actress in a Supporting Role - I hope Jessica Chastain wins this. She was the one who made it for me in The Help. Everyone else did a good job, too, except for Janet McTear. If you haven’t noticed by now, I hated Albert Nobbs.
Animated Feature - THANK GOD CARS 2 WAS NOT NOMINATED. That is all. Also, wtf no Tin Tin?
Art Direction - This one’s always hard for me because they always have SO MANY DIFFERENT GENRES for this one. I’m personally holding out for The Artist, but that’s just me.
Cinematography - My all time favorite category. Again, I’m partial to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but if something were going to beat that, it would have to be The Tree of Life. I couldn’t get into that movie, but oh my god, it was fucking gorgeous.
Costume Design - You know, they just need to rename this award “Best Period Film Outfits,” because seriously now….
Best Director - I honestly don’t care who wins this as long as it’s not Woody Allen.
Film Editing - I always felt like this was cinematography’s little brother or something, so this is another category I absolutely love. Again, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Did an excellent job with that. Also would be happy if either The Descendants or The Artist won.
Music (Original Score) - I seriously want to know what shit the Academy was smoking when they thought not to include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for this category so we can outlaw the shit out of it.
Music (Original Song) - Only two? I’m pretty sure there were more than two original songs this past year…
Best Picture - ….. ok, this is fucking tough, so I’m just going to list the ones I don’t want to win: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Midnight in Paris, and War Horse. Everything else I’d be happy if it won.
All the other categories I’m meh about, so I’m skipping over them. Also, WTF nothing for Shame? I also expected more nods for Drive, because that film was flawless. Nothing for Young Adult ( which to be fair, was only decent because Charlize Theron was fucking brilliant in that )? This is a weird year…
